New Characters & The End Game Event

Hi mods! I just wanted to clarify: should we assume that all new seniors and juniors slept through the end game events? Or do we have the option of plotting some kind of involvement with other new senior and junior characters? Just curious since they technically could've been impacted since they were around as NPCs.

Yes, only characters who were explicitly involved with endgame events while the events were happening were awake. You can assume they were present during the aftermath (i.e. when everyone was gathered in the lodge by the MACUSA and sent home by bus), but all new characters (sophomore, junior, senior) were asleep during endgame.

hey so for Occlumency it says that students can only get in if they're invited by Ms. Lilywhite. are students who are new to gooseberry this year able to get in on a recommendation from a teacher at their previous school? what's the process for that?

Yes, he can get into Occlumency as with proper recommendations, but he also must enroll in DADA.

Clarification re: sophomores

I know there's a lil icon on the character roster to indicate which students in the upper grades just got here and which we're handwaving as ~here all along~ but does this apply to sophomores too? Or since they're all new as characters we're able to choose whether they were here as freshmen or not?

Yes, that's up to you! We basically put the little star to indicate to applicants that this student should be brand new, but if there's no star beside the name, you can choose whether this is their first year or if they were here last year. :)

Yes, like it says on the list, the items on the Overused Concepts list aren't forbidden; it's just a notice that we've got a lot of characters like this already. If the concept is included in a thoughtful way, i.e. it's well-integrated in the character concept and not just tacked on randomly, then you're fine.

I'm going to guess that you're concerned about gardening! Currently our characters who are really talented at gardening are Wilde, Phoebe, Nia, Charlotte and Heathcliff. As long as your character is pretty distinct from them in personality/history (and from a glance, it appears she is), then you don't need to worry about it. :)

Planning way ahead bc I'm a monster but I'd like Clem to be scouted/offered a position with a pro team over winter break because:

I don't want to put her up for the Gooseberry team OOC bc she has HAD her spot in the limelight, and also I want to have her try out for the Gooseberry cheer squad instead anyway

There are very few reasons she would pass up the opportunity to play in front of scouts ICly even if she were committed to focusing on the Ebonhide team, but if she had a job set up for her she'd be more relaxed about it

I can do nothing to make her sad, ever, and it would psychologically crush her if she tried out for the school team and didn't make it

Her dad has some industry connections and could probably set her up with talent scouts directly (he WAS a quodpot player but I'm kind of assuming there's more overlap in the quodpot and quidditch industries than in like... the NFL and MLB for example... bc wizards)

Last year I had Ivy struggle with her uncertain future so I think it'd be nice to play a graduating senior who has stuff more squared away

I will definitely have her be scouted after the school year ends anyway (refer to pt 3) and moving it up to winter break will give me a chance to deal w the impact it has on her life for a little while longer than the 1 or 2 weeks or whatever she'd have over the summer

I was planning on adding a note to future LARP IC/OOCs asking people to let you guys know if they want to toss one of their characters into the club so that the club roster can be updated. Would it be possible for Hogwarts students that aren't necessarily academically gifted to be accepted into the exchange program through creative talent and letters of recommendation from professors that might be a little biased since he's the child of war heroes? I was thinking he might've squeaked by with the Hogwarts equivalent of a low B average through peer tutoring, but also tried to submit an Elle Woods-esque "video essay" to showcase his other talents. Would this fly with Gooseberry staff?

Yes, we just need a solid reason for why he'd be considered, which could include letters of recommendation and demonstration of creative talents. Basically, if you're thoughtful and justify the special circumstances well, we'll be content assuming he was able to realistically nab that coveted exchange program spot.

Correct, the exchange student program is only with Hogwarts. All other students must reside somewhere in the Americas. They don't need to have been born in North/Central/South America, but we would prefer more American-flavor characters than European-flavor ones, if that makes sense.

But if you have a particular idea, you can pitch it to us here? We'll be happy to discuss character concepts. :)

Yeah, all character limits reset to what you currently have at the start of the year. You still need to submit 3 activity/character at the end of the month, but you can send in a petition now so there's no waiting period for being able to hold. :O

Charlotte might get in a bit of trouble with Ms. Rhee if she uses her form to intentionally scare people, aaaand Ms. Rhee will warn her not to go into the lake unsupervised. Goosey has learned that children aren't food, but Animagi like Charlotte and Reid ought to keep their watery excursions to the streams and shallows.

So Nia and Clem went to Ms. Rhee about what happened to Clem on 10/10. Both of them mention that they don't think Sy Stoker was involved. Nia also adds that while she thinks it was a prank (and will probably mention the fact that Quentin Youngblood might be worth following up with because of some of the things he said), she wanted to make sure faculty was told before things escalated like they did last year and/or just in case this had something to do with that "adult" ghost some kids have been talking about.

Hey so I don't actually have any ideas at the moment, but I just wanted to see how you guys felt about players of TAs running an ic/oocs around their class, in the vein of the laughing potion IC/OOC, for small scenes, or the patronus IC/OOC for a RNG game? What the kids are learning is probably something that is mostly mod-controlled? But I figured if I ever think of something Charms related with a fun RNG game I can throw it together, and just wanted to make sure that that was okay. I'll get permission first if I think the subject matter is something big/that the students might not be learning.

Yes, we're okay with this idea! Just run it by us first if the exercise would grant characters any particularly strong new powers or abilities. We want to keep a leash on spells that canon determines to be very difficult, just to maintain a thin guise of realism. We trust your judgement, but feel free to ask if you're uncertain!
